Leaking basements are bad news. There are several reasons a basement gets wet that have absolutely nothing to do with a hurricane. However, moisture from reasons other than flooding can still create a lot of damage. It is key that any issues that cause a wet basement be repaired before the structure and substructure of a domicile are severely compromised.
There are several parts to the riddle of ending moisture concerns in the basement, but it is necessary that the riddle be cracked.
Begin on the interior of your abode. Inspect the ceiling, walls, and flooring of your basement. Check if there are any apparent sites that are wet. Examine any splits in the walls or flooring to see if water is getting in. Secure some plastic over the gaps and leave it for several days. After a time, check again and take the plastic from the area. If there is water on the side of the plastic toward the wall then there is no doubt water is seeping into the basement from the outdoors. If there is water on the piece of the plastic that faces towards the basement, the trouble is too much humidity in the air of the basement. If there is water on either side of the plastic you have a two-fold dilemma happening.
The two issues of water concentration in the basement from inside causes and leaching from the outside into the basement should be maintained. If these problems are permitted to continue they will cause indescribable damage to your residence. Too much moisture will create mold and mildew to produce. A stuffy scent in the air is a hint that this is already a problem. Wood especially in the joists and thresholds are amenable to water damage. The wood begins to rot and the structure of the residence is damaged. Termites are pulled towards to wet spots so too much wetness could advance a termite swarm which would end in yet additional harm to the construction of the home. Water that comes in from the outdoors will weaken and ruin the cement foundation which in turn makes the residence to be rickety Don't delay the needed reparations.
Reduce the wetness in the air of the basement by drying clothes on a line outside instead of in the basement. If the clothes dryer is placed in the basement be certain it is vented to the exterior of the home and that the air vent is sealed properly. Be careful the washer doesn't have any wobbly connections or rips in the hoses that go from the machine to the water pipe. Examine all the pipework in the basement and throughout the domicile to be certain there are no problems. Get a dehumidifier and have it put in. This will aid in drying out the basement.
Patch and close any breaks and openings in the floor and walls of the basement. Use a water resistant sealant on walls and flooring. Make certain the earth inclines down and away from the domicile and that the gutters are empty and in great repair. If it is necessary have groundwork drains put in and waterproof the outside of your substructure at the same time the trenches are dug to put the drains in. Lastly be certain a sump pump is installed in the floor of the basement.
